Annual Letter from the Owner
The whole family squeezed onto a Starboard SUP
Twelve seasons have now come and gone, and On The Edge begins it's 13th winter after another unforgettable summer. We've had a blast these past few months getting out on the water, making tons of new friends, and enjoying every minute in the sun, even as we count the days till it snows again. We've also gotten to experiment and try new sports that we can bring to the shop and share our passion for with our awesome community.
Take Foiling for example. If you haven't seen it, it's one of the coolest things you can do on water. Proficient riders glide effortlessly over the surface, using the wind and waves to propel them while the foil carves and cuts through the water below. The only problem is you don't start at that blissful state. There are many, many, many (and many more) times where it feels impossible. The 20th time the board bucks you like a bronco into oblivion is about where you question whether it's worth it or not. But then, very slowly, the board stops fighting back. You start to stand for longer and longer and then, eventually, the board takes off and flies. Everything goes quiet and all you hear is a gentle trickling sound, like someone dragging their fingers through the water. You no longer feel the ripples and waves of the surface, but a smooth, steady glide below your feet. And you know what? All that epic crashing, falling on your face into the water was absolutely worth it.
If you're a parent, there's one thing you always count on to be in ample supply; advice. Most people are more then happy to give their opinion on how to raise kids, and that's not to mention the thousands of hours of reading material at your fingertips with advice on every subject imaginable. Last spring I got to see a very old friend of mine who also had some advice to give. Bev is not your average mountain-town lady. She is one of the kindest, most generous, loving examples of God's grace that I've ever met. You could fill several books with stories of how she's loved and cared for her family and friends, and several more with how much she's given back to her community. Bev is definitely one of those people you hope gives you parenting advice, because you know it's going to be good. So when I saw her for the first time in a long while, I got excited for some properly good advice. She gave me one of her signature hugs that makes you feel like a little kid, then she stood back, looked at me, and said "Appreciate every moment."
At first, I was a bit disappointed. I had been hoping for something a little more long-winded. Then the more I thought about it, the more I realized just how much she packed into those 3 words. It's not about appreciating the good times, that's the easy part. It's about appreciating all of it. The good and bad moments, the struggles and triumphs, the victories and the failures. Every moment. Watching Winnie learn what it means to struggle and fail is certainly not easy, but knowing how much more the successes will mean to her because of those failures is priceless.
Even on snow and water, the same principles apply. The first time flying a foil board would never have felt so sweet if I hadn't spent half the summer getting tossed headfirst into the lake. Those perfect bluebird powder days would never be so unforgettable if they weren't surrounded by all the cold, miserable, hard-packed ones. Thank you for letting us help create all those moments, and to continue to be here with you through it all. We know the difficult days are every bit as important as the good days, but remember, the BEST days always start On The Edge.
